Jalen Rose and Tracy McGrady Make Goodwill Trip to Qatar on Veterans Day

Blink

As part of a goodwill trip to Doha from Nov. 10-13, NBA Legends Jalen Rose and Tracy McGrady visited with U.S. Military personnel today and took a tour of some of Qatar’s 2022 World Cup sites. The Al Udeid Air Base in Doha serves as a primary logistics and command hub for U.S. operations in the Middle East. Rose and McGrady also visited with school-aged Qatari children and university students from Qatar’s Education City, learning more about the country’s efforts to partner with the top global universities to continue to be at the forefront of education both now, and into the future. “A highlight of our trip has definitely been visiting with our troops at the base in Doha on Veterans Day,” said Jalen Rose. “Qatar is clearly on a path to being the sports capital of the region. They’ll be on the world stage at the end of 2022 when they host the World Cup. It’s exciting to get a first look at how the preparations for the first large sporting event in a post-Covid pandemic world are coming along.” “This is my second trip to Qatar and my first since 2018 when I visited with Klay Thompson, Carmelo Anthony, and Luke Walton,” said Tracy McGrady. “Both times, I have been made to feel at home by the incredible hospitality and warmth of the people. But this time is certainly extra special because of our visit with the U.S. troops serving in Qatar right now.” The trip was organized by the U.S.-based event management company, Blink. 83 Years to Kristallnacht

March of the Living International

Buildings in Paris, Warsaw, Budapest, and Thessaloniki, along with the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem, will be illuminated throughout the night with messages from Holocaust survivors, leaders, and students from around the world projected onto its walls. On the night of November 9-10, 1938, the Nazis organized for the murder of Jews and the burning of 1,400 synagogues and Jewish institutions in Germany and Austria as part of the Kristallnacht pogrom. This event is one of the seminal moments that led to the Holocaust. To mark this historical event and to stand in protest to the rise of antisemitic incidents and hate crimes around the world, International March of the Living launched the ‘Let There Be Light’ global initiative in which individuals, institutions, and houses of worship of all faiths leave their lights on during the night of November 9, as a symbol of mutual responsibility and the shared struggle against antisemitism, racism, hatred, and intolerance. The buildings displaying the initiative include the Jewish Community building in Paris located in Jerusalem Square, Thessaloniki City Hall, the Great Synagogue in Budapest, the Great Synagogue in Warsaw, and the Old City Walls in Jerusalem. A formal ceremony was held at the Old City Walls in Jerusalem. At the event, 3 Holocaust survivors who witnessed Kristallnacht as children were honored; Carol Kinderman, Uri Eshed and Tirza Halivni. The survivors attended the ceremony with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. President of Israel Isaac Herzog welcomed the initiative and commented that, "Among the horrors of the Holocaust, a central and painful place is reserved for Kristallnacht, the terrible pogrom against the Jews of Germany and Austria that symbolizes the turning point in the extermination of European Jewry. The night of Kristallnacht heralded the crossing of a fateful line, the signal to relinquish all restraint. In one night, an underlying sentiment of antisemitism became the overt expression of the many. We are all committed to fighting and uprooting every incarnation of antisemitism. We will continue to do all we can to remember, memorialize, and ensure that such horrific events are a thing of the past, and the past alone.” Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett: “Many years have passed since we needed the kindness of others to protect us from a cruel tyrant who massacred our people. Today, the Jewish People is the sovereign power in our historic homeland, a strong and prosperous state that, with its own strength, defends itself. We will never again entrust our destiny to others. We will always be vigilant and defend ourselves, the eternal people, in Jerusalem our eternal capital. ‘Am Yisrael Chai.’” Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yair Lapid, son of a Holocaust survivor: "History proves that you can kill Jews, but not the Jewish idea. You can shatter synagogue windows, but you can't shatter the spirit behind them.” Israeli Minister of Diaspora Affairs Dr. Nachman Shai: "Tonight, 83 years to Kristallnacht, the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem, the eternal capital of Israel, sparkle with pride - illuminated by the bravery of Holocaust survivors and their families. I am here today because my family survived the Holocaust, and as Minister of Diaspora Affairs, I am excited to take part in this special project. A little light repels much of the darkness." European Commission Coordinator on combating antisemitism Katharina Von Schnurbein said: “Eighty-three years after the Pogrom, antisemitism is on the rise, attacks on Jews are still a reality. The European Union is united and determined to roll back antisemitism through words and action and ensure safety for all Europeans, regardless of their religion or belief, ethnic identity or skin color.” Mayor of Thessaloniki Konstantinos Zervas noted, “The City of Thessaloniki participates in the global initiative ‘Let There Be Light’ of the International March of the Living, honoring the memory of all the victims of the Holocaust and especially of the 50,000 innocent Jews of Thessaloniki, 20% of our city’s population in 1943, who were deported and annihilated in the Nazi concentration camps. We do not forget. On the occasion of the 83rd anniversary of the Kristallnacht, we reaffirm our unwavering conviction in the fight against antisemitism and all forms of hatred. For a more humane, more compassionate, a brighter world.” Poland’s Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Michael Schudrich noted, “A Jew remembers. In Judaism we have the commandment, the Mitzvah, to ‘remember what Amalek did to you’. This is a resolute demand for all generations. Many lessons can be learned from the Holocaust and the revival from the ashes. Perhaps the most important message is unity. You just have to be together; you have to help each other. There is no obligation to agree with every Jew. But there is a duty to help every Jew. Remember Kristallnacht and all the devastation that comes after that evening and remember that you must be 'one people, with one heart'.” Élie Korchia', Président of the Consistoire Central of France commented, “The murder of hundreds of Jews and the destruction of 1,400 Jewish synagogues and religious institutions during Kristallnacht in 1938 marked the start of the mass extermination of more than six million Jews by the Nazis. We must fight the scourge of antisemitism and fight the hatred of Israel. We must be united to carry our torch of light loud and clear against obscurantism.” Phyllis Greenberg Heideman & Dr. Shmuel Rosenman, President & Chairman of the International March of the Living said, “The International March of the Living organization has devoted itself to Holocaust education and the fight against antisemitism. Tonight, as we mark 83 years since Kristallnacht, we call on the world to stop, even for a moment, to remember the horrors of the past and to put up a bright warning sign against the antisemitism that still shamelessly raises its head. We congratulate the European countries that are taking part in the "Let There Be Light" initiative to clearly remember the past and in support of the common struggle against antisemitism. We will continue to work to ensure that Never Means Never.” The International March of the Living is an annual educational program, bringing individuals from around the world to Poland and Israel to study the history of the Holocaust and to examine the roots of prejudice, intolerance and hatred. Quidel Corporation to Sponsor Distinguished Speaker Series Conducted by the Bay Area Lyme Foundation

Quidel Corporation

Quidel Corporation announced today that it will serve as sponsor for the upcoming Distinguished Speaker Series being conducted by the Bay Area Lyme Foundation. Quidel is a California-based diagnostic health care manufacturer known for successfully developing rapid diagnostic health solutions, including the industry-leading Sofia ® 2 Lyme FIA test for Lyme disease. The Distinguished Speaker Series are free community events that provide new information on various Lyme-related topics. Speakers typically feature an esteemed scientific researcher paired with a Lyme survivor sharing their inspirational story in an open-discussion format. The events are designed to create a more informed, connected and inspired public, which, in turn, will lead to stronger families, schools, businesses and communities. “We share the Bay Area Lyme Foundation’s mission to make Lyme disease easy to diagnose and simple to cure,” said Judi Tilghman, Ph.D., vice president of technology assessment at Quidel. “Over the years the Foundation has collaborated with world-class scientists and institutions to accelerate medical breakthroughs for Lyme disease and to build a more informed and engaged public. We are honored to sponsor this important speakers series in support of those efforts.” On Nov. 3, the series will feature a researcher, physician and Lyme patient advocate who will discuss how the immune system “can protect or attack” when it comes to Lyme disease. The discussion will focus on the importance of using a broad and comprehensive diagnostic and treatment approach to Lyme disease. Speakers include Liz Horn, Ph.D., MBI, principal investigator, Lyme Disease Biobank, and principal, LHC Biosolutions; Victoria Blaho, Ph.D., assistant professor, Sanford Burnham Prebys, Immunity and Pathogenesis Program; and David N. Haney, Ph.D., researcher and family caregiver. The Nov. 3 event will be held from 4-7 p.m. in the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute in San Diego. Reservations are required and can be made at SpeakerSeries@bayarealyme.org or by calling 650-530-2684. Full vaccination is required for this venue. Lyme disease is on the rise to record numbers throughout the country and has the potential to affect as many as 476,000 citizens before the year is out. Leading the way in Lyme disease testing is the innovative Sofia ® 2 Lyme FIA by Quidel. This revolutionary test provides the patient and physician with indicative results within 15 minutes, as opposed to days, which has historically been the norm (and during which time organisms can spread and become systemic). It can be performed in the privacy of a doctor’s office, local clinic or even by a nurse at a children’s summer camp; and it is the only test that can get results from a simple finger prick of blood. College of DuPage’s Human Services Program Adopts Open Educational Resources to Lower Textbook Costs for Students

College of DuPage

Eager to expand access to educational opportunities, the Human Services program at College of DuPage is taking advantage of the College’s Open Educational Resources (OER) program. To date, more than half of all Human Services classes at COD utilize OER to make attending college more affordable for students. “Our goal is to reduce costs for students and to ensure that everyone has access to materials from the first day of a course,” Human Services Program Chair Jason Florin said. COD has embraced the Open Access Scholarship movement in higher education, and the OER program prioritizes low-cost and no-cost, day-one access to course materials for all students, particularly those who are taking general education courses. The creation of the OER program stems from a desire to close the opportunity gap and to provide equitable education for all, said President Dr. Brian Caputo. “When high-quality, no-cost resources are accessible to everyone-independent of one’s socioeconomic status, it brings all students that much closer to reaching similar standards of education,” said Dr. Caputo. With a goal of creating more opportunities for students, Florin is collaborating with National Louis University to develop a bachelor’s degree transfer pathway that utilizes OER. “If we are able to significantly minimize or eliminate textbook costs in this program, I believe we will be offering one of the most affordable four-year degrees anywhere in the country, equal to the cost for one year of tuition at most Illinois public institutions, and a single semester at private universities,” he said. “And importantly, we are not sacrificing any quality by doing this. In fact, most of the time the quality of the curriculum actually improves when faculty adopt an OER because they are intimately involved in finding relevant materials, updating assignments and ensuring that the course objectives are fulfilled. I've found that in the courses where I've adopted OER, the students are more engaged than before.” The new pathway would complement the existing 3+1 Bachelor of Arts in Human Services partnership with National Louis University. Through the partnership, students take their first three years of study through COD, while the fourth year is taught by NLU faculty on COD’s campus at a reduced four-year tuition rate of around $26,000. COD Reference Librarian Denise Coté said access to OER is just one example of how COD is bridging the equity gap for students in regard to access to technology and resources—a gap made ever wider by the COVID-19 pandemic. “COD faculty and staff are always thinking innovatively to help students succeed from day one,” she said. “I continue to be motivated by my fellow faculty who work tirelessly to help students be successful and are dedicated to the constant improvement of teaching and learning at the College.” With COD’s OER program proving successful, Coté said the long-term goal is to develop OER materials to fully support all of COD’s degree programs with the goal of improving educational outcomes, an initiative called the zero-textbook-costs program. “We are making great progress expanding OER to other academic areas across the College,” she said. “Feedback from students about these materials is not only that they're grateful for the price barrier to have been removed but also that they feel the course materials have been designed specifically for them.” Learn more about OER opportunities at COD.
